In 1987, the City of Grand Forks adopted an ordinance (Chapter 17, Article 3, Grand Forks City Code of 1987) establishing the Historic Preservation Commission. A primary goal defined in the ordinance is the safeguarding of the heritage of the city through the preservation and regulation of the historic landmarks and districts that reflect elements of Grand Forks’ cultural, social, economic, political, and architectural history.
Adoption of the ordinance made Grand Forks eligible to participate in the National Park Service Certified Local Government (CLG) program through the State Historical Society of North Dakota. The CLG program has provided support for local preservation projects such as architectural surveys and National Register nominations, as well as limited operational costs for the Commission office.
